Carbon Canyon Road Closed Due to Motorcycle Accident

It happened several hours ago, but a motorcycle accident on Carbon Canyon Road (State Highway 142) on the Orange County side west of Sleepy Hollow and east of Olinda Village has led to a full closure of the highway.

There are no details at this time, but a full closure and of this length sadly suggests a fatality.  More info will be provided as it becomes available.

  1. I drove by this accident yesterday just after it happened. Ironically, my girlfriend and I were talking about the dangers of riding a bike through here due to the tight turns and blind corners. Mind you, I am a long time Brea resident and Carbon Canyon was my go to night drive throughout High School and post college.

As we approached the accident scene, I saw a damaged motorcycle and helmet on the floor, a person with their helmet on lying unconscious on the floor and a man without his helmet near the person. There was a family(?) driving an SUV that stopped to help them it seems but someone was crying and screaming. Debris was everywhere and I did not stop to help as there were already 6-7 people outside walking around the wreckage looking to help. As soon as we passed, 3 Brea PD cars and an ambulance were speeding down to the location. I did not see any blood and hoped the person was okay.. It looked as if the man was the rider and the person on the floor may have been a woman riding with him on the back. Maybe they got thrown off after hitting oncoming traffic/lost control after the sharp blind turn.

  2. The rider was my 26-year old nephew and the light of our lives. He died instantly at the scene. His best friend was the other rider.

  3. Tragic. Many have been wondering what happened. Good eye witness summary by "Anonymous" helps us to understand. Thank you for having this Blog and a place to share Canyon information.

  5. I am so sorry for the loss of your nephew. We drove by this accident just after it happened and it was horrifying. I think of it several times a day and can’t shake it from my minds eye. I have been searching for news and can’t find much. I will relay what I saw here. We were driving from Brea towards Sleepy Hollow around 1:30pm. The road started to veer to the right, and a large pickup truck in front of us was stopped. We couldn’t figure out why until we saw the aftermath of the accident just ahead. There was a truck and trailer facing us in the opposite lane with its back tires damaged and debris scattered everywhere across the highway. I saw a blue mangled motorcycle up ahead from the stopped pickup truck in front of us. I saw a lifeless body face down that had been covered with a piece of clothing from head to waist. I saw someone with a helmet on sitting down with their head in their hands. I did not see the 2nd motorcycle. I saw 4 or 5 people outside of their cars trying to help. Some cars became impatient and tried to drive down the middle, where the 2 lanes meet. They didn’t realize what was going on until it was too late, and then I would see their shocked faces as they were driving by. Someone decided to take charge and wave cars thru, one direction at a time. The pickup truck in front of us did not drive forward, and did a 3 point turn to leave in the other direction instead. As we drove past, I saw the blood. I went in to shock. A few minutes later, the police cars drove past, and the yellow fire engine, and ambulance. I didn’t take a picture or video, because of how disrespectful that would be and I wouldn’t want to relive it. But now I’m questioning if I should have, to pass on to the Brea PD for investigation? As soon as cars started to drive thru, they ran over the debris and changed the layout. I don’t know if it would have made any difference.

  6. Thanks to everyone for these comments and it is always terrible when a fatality on the highway takes place, no matter the circumstances, as I have personal experience with this. I know there's nothing that can be said other to offer condolences to the family for their loss.

  8. I was riding my bike up Carbon Canyon and these guys on the motorcycles passed me. I distinctly remember the guy closest to the right shoulder wearing a blue flannel/striped shirt. I saw a bunch of vehicles stopped and then I noticed the wreckage. I rode through it while there was a tall guy organizing the traffic. I remember seeing the guy with the blue shirt lying down on the ground with a lot of blood next to his head. I wish I hadn't looked. I left the scene quickly and rode home but haven't been able to get my mind off of this ever since. My condolences to his family and to all involved.
