According to the City of Brea website, the appeal hearing for the proposed Canyon Crest housing development of 165 luxury homes on over 300 acres on the north side of Carbon Canyon between Olinda Village and Sleepy Hollow has been postponed from tonight, 18 November, a regular council meeting, to 2 December @ 7:00 p.m., two weeks from now.
The reason actually is not stated to relate to the Triangle Complex fire, which caused considerable damage in the Canyon, including the loss of four houses and some outbuildings on the Brea side and has left portions of Carbon Canyon Road closed for several days, but because of the lack of a quorum.
At any rate, the fire, which now joins the ranks of major fires from 1990, 1978, 1958, 1929, and, perhaps, others, has reminded everyone of the fragile intersection of wildland and urban areas. It also serves to place another layer of concern onto others related to traffic, pollution, and loss of rapidly vanishing open space and habitat, according to environmental impact report specifications for unavoidable, significant, adverse impacts. Beyond that, our continued drought, concerns over future water supply, issues of trash disposal, maintenance of schools and other infrastructure, and many other matters should give all of us pause when it comes to continuing (or seeking to) the nearly unfettered development that has consumed southern California over its history.
The recent firestorms are an important background to continuing the fight to win the appeal, deny this project, and protect what little remains of Carbon Canyon for preservation and protective reasons.
Please come on Tuesday, 2 December @ 7:00 p.m. in the council chambers of Brea's city hall and lend your support to the appeal!
